Religious Tattoo

Religious tattoos are quite popular these days. Interestingly, the appearance of a religious tattoo on whatever body part way back then was not really as accepted. Religious tattoos were even considered taboo in a lot of societies.

Fortunately, this point of view changed over time because it would actually be a shame to have these stunning works of art banned from ever existing. There are so many designs of religious tattoos that would take the breaths of a lot of people away.

Interestingly, it was the emergence of Christianity that paved the way for religious tattoos. At the time, religious tattoos were still considered taboo in Rome. In fact, Romans did not tolerate the concept of tattoos in any way. Tattoos were still seen as barbaric. But a lot of Christians begged to differ. An underground practice of inking began amongst Christians all over the world.

The common practice back then was to etch crosses right on the underside of the forearms, as a form of secret sign amongst the underground Christians. This was actually a bold move on the part of the underground Christians, knowing that if found out, these cross tattoos could lead to their very deaths.

Still, Christians persisted in expressing their faith through these tattoos. Through the years, more and more images of religious tattoos began emerging after the cross. These include angels, such as the cherubim and the seraphim, and Sacred Hearts. Patron saints also became popular designs for religious tattoos. In addition, the practice of practice of inking religious tattoos expanded outside the Christian circle as well.

Of course, some people link themselves with religious tattoos not for spiritual reasons, but merely for personal reasons. Take Mexican gangs, for instance. Mexican gang members are huge fans of religious tattoos and they have them on virtually every feasible part of their bodies.

This expansion is a clear indication of the prominence of religious tattoos in the industry today. These are definitely here to stay. And it is not just the practice of inking such tattoos that has experienced significant changes for the tattoo designs themselves have also experienced such changes.

For starters, the design for the Sacred Heart can be paired with a barbed wire. Or the image of the Virgin Mary could have something else aside from the rosary in her praying hands. Whatever the design of the religious tattoo may be, what remains a fact is that this is still a strong expression of the Christian faith.
